Effects of high-energy laser peening followed by pre-hot corrosion on stress relaxation, microhardness, and fatigue life and strength of single-crystal nickel CMSX-4® superalloy

Abstract This study investigated the stress relaxation and fatigue life strength of laser-peened single-crystal nickel superalloy specimens compared to unpeened shot-peened following hot corrosion exposure then testing. The were treated by conventional laser peening a new cyclic plus thermal microstructure engineering process. latter treatment supports benefit unique process involving application layers using high energy with large footprint spots combined interspersed annealing. Stress measurements slitting showed plastic penetration depth exceeded shot factor 24. Unpeened peened exposed sulphate corrosives at 700 °C for 300 h tested. Tests five non-laser-peened all failed in low-cycle regime, whereas three identically tested achieved multi-million-cycle runout without failure, indicating fully consistent peening. Additional tests also improvement 2:1 Residual post hot-corrosion testing notable 5 mm retention residual eigenstress specimen.
